Tan Son Nhat, and how to get out of it

On this page
Tan Son Nhat airport is eight kilometres from District 1, which sounds like nothing and is the reason people miss flights. The airport sits inside the city, the traffic decides the journey, and the arrivals hall is where the only real decision gets made.
Which terminal do you want?
Tan Son Nhat airport splits by flight: international goes through Terminal 2. Domestic flights use Terminal 1 or Terminal 3, the new domestic terminal that opened in 2025 and took most Vietnam Airlines and VietJet services.
T1 and T2 sit next to each other and are a short walk apart. T3 is a separate building with its own access road, which is the trap on a domestic connection: arriving at the wrong one costs a shuttle ride and twenty minutes.
Check the terminal printed on the booking. It is the single most useful thing to know before the taxi door closes.
| Getting out | Cost | Time to District 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Bus 109 or 152 | 5,000–15,000 dong | 45–60 minutes |
| Grab or app car | 150,000–250,000 dong | 20–45 minutes |
| Vinasun or Mai Linh from the rank | 170,000–280,000 dong | 20–45 minutes |
| Hotel car | 400,000–700,000 dong | 20–45 minutes |
What does the bus cost?
The 109 runs to Pham Ngu Lao and the 152 towards District 1, for 5,000 to 15,000 dong, from stops outside the terminals. They take forty-five minutes to an hour and stop frequently.
With a big bag at rush hour the bus is a poor trade. With hand luggage at ten in the morning it is the obvious one, at about a dollar against ten.
The airport to city guide covers the equivalent routes at the other Vietnamese airports, which work the same way.
Where do you find a Grab?
At the marked ride-hailing point, which moves. Depending on the terminal and the month it is on the departures level or in a numbered car park lane, and the app gives the current instruction when you book.
Walking up one level is usually what the instruction means. Drivers cannot wait at arrivals, which is why the pickup is never where you come out.
Fares to District 1 run 150,000 to 250,000 dong. The motorbike taxi guide covers the bike option, which is cheaper and only sensible with a small bag.
Which taxi should you take?
Vinasun or Mai Linh from the official rank, or a car booked in an app. Both meter, both are green or white with the company name on the door, and the rank is signed outside arrivals.
The problem at this airport has never been the metered taxis. It is the unmarked cars that approach you inside the hall offering a fixed price, which the scams guide covers in detail.
Ignore anyone who approaches you before you reach the rank. That single rule removes the whole category.
What is in the arrivals hall?
ATMs, SIM counters, currency exchange and a crowd along the rail. The crowd is families meeting arrivals and it is thicker than at most airports, which is what the photograph on this page shows.
Take cash from an ATM rather than the exchange counters, and buy the SIM in town rather than at the kiosk — both points the money guide and the SIM guide make with figures.
Tan Son Nhat has no left luggage worth the price inside the terminal. The luggage storage guide covers the alternatives in the city.
How early should you arrive?
Two hours for domestic, three for international, and more in the evening peak. Between six and nine at night the domestic check-in hall runs at capacity and the queues reach the doors.
Traffic to the airport peaks on the same schedule, so the delay is charged twice: once on the road and once in the hall.
For a morning flight, leave the city before six thirty. The road to the airport is one of the worst in Saigon at seven.
Can you sleep or wait there?
Not comfortably. Tan Son Nhat is a busy airport with limited seating, few quiet corners and no proper transit hotel inside the terminals.
For a long layover, go into the city. Twenty minutes each way buys a proper meal and a walk, and the layover guide sets out what fits into six hours.
For an overnight, the hotels on the roads around the airport are ten minutes away and cost a fraction of a terminal lounge for the same hours.
