A long weekend in Vietnam, and the one city to give it to

On this page
A long weekend in Vietnam is a real trip if you spend it in one place, and a bad one if you spend it proving the country is long. It is 1,650 km end to end, and a weekend that includes two internal flights has spent most of itself on the ground at airports.
Which city should a long weekend in Vietnam go to?
Hanoi, for a first visit. It packs the most into walking distance of anywhere in the country: the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem, the mausoleum quarter and two good museums, plus the best short day trip in Vietnam.
Hoi An and Da Nang together, for a second. They sit about 30 km apart with an international airport between them, which means one arrival, one transfer and both a UNESCO old town and a long beach.
Ho Chi Minh City, if the war history is what brings you. It has the War Remnants Museum and Cu Chi within reach, and it eats better than its reputation.
| Base | Best for | Day trip | Airport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanoi | A first visit | Ninh Binh, ~2 hours | Noi Bai, 45 min out |
| Hoi An and Da Nang | A beach and an old town | My Son or the Hai Van Pass | Da Nang, in the city |
| Ho Chi Minh City | War history, food | Cu Chi or the delta | Tan Son Nhat, close in |
| Phu Quoc | Doing nothing at all | None needed | Direct international flights |

What does the Hanoi version look like?
Day one on foot in the Old Quarter, learning to cross the road and eating breakfast outside. Day two west to the mausoleum quarter, the Temple of Literature and the Museum of Ethnology. Day three out to Ninh Binh.
The three days in Hanoi route sets that out day by day, and it is the closest thing this site has to a weekend plan.
What is the mistake?
Two cities. Hanoi and Saigon are about 1,150 km apart, and combining them on a long weekend costs a flight, two airport transfers and the better part of a day out of three or four.
A Ha Long day trip is the second mistake. It is 3 hours each way from Hanoi, which buys roughly 4 hours afloat for an 11-hour commitment — Ninh Binh gives comparable limestone for 2 hours each way.
What if you have four days rather than three?
Give the fourth to the same place rather than to a second one. A fourth day in Hanoi buys the Museum of Ethnology, which most visitors skip because it is not walkable, plus an unhurried Old Quarter evening.
The one exception is the Hoi An and Da Nang pair, where a fourth day genuinely opens something new: My Son, about 40 km inland, is a half day among Cham temple ruins and it is the only UNESCO site within reach of a short trip. The heritage guide has the rest of them.
What a fourth day does not buy is a second city. The arithmetic does not change: a flight and two transfers still cost most of a day.
When is a long weekend worth taking?
When the weather in your one chosen region is right, which is a smaller question than it is for a long trip. A weekend commits to one climate, so you only need one region's calendar rather than three.
Hanoi and the north: October to April. The centre: February to August. The south and the islands: November to April. The seasons guide has the detail, and on a short trip the weather matters more than usual because there is no spare day to lose.
What does a long weekend cost?
The flight, and then very little. Three or four days in one Vietnamese city is among the cheaper short breaks available from anywhere in Asia: a mid-range room runs 80 to 110 US dollars, street meals are a couple of dollars, and museum entry is trivial — the War Remnants Museum charges 40,000 dong and Hanoi's sites are comparable.
A comfortable middle across everything but flights sits near 1,650,000 dong a day, about 65 US dollars, on the cost guide figures. Three days of that is less than one night in most European capitals.
The line that moves is the day trip. A guided day to Ninh Binh with transport and lunch is the single largest item in a short stay.
What should you sort before flying?
The visa, and earlier than you think. Some nationalities hold exemptions of 15 or 45 days; others need an e-visa however short the stay, and the exemption lists change. Applying takes days rather than minutes — see the e-visa guide.
Sort the airport transfer too, which on a three-day trip is a meaningful share of the time. Hanoi's Noi Bai is about 45 minutes from the Old Quarter; Da Nang's airport is in the city, which is a real argument for the central option.
Two more days changes the answer completely. Five days is enough for a city and a landscape beside it, rather than a city alone.
FAQ
Is a long weekend enough for Vietnam?
Enough for one place, and nothing more. Vietnam runs 1,650 km end to end, so a 3 or 4 day trip that tries to combine north and centre spends most of itself in airports. One city, one day trip, and a flight in and out of the same airport is the shape that works.
Which city is best for a short trip to Vietnam?
Hanoi for a first visit, Hoi An and Da Nang for a second. Hanoi packs the most into walking distance and has a day trip to Ninh Binh; the Hoi An and Da Nang pair gives an old town and a beach 30 km apart with an international airport between them.
Can you do Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in a long weekend?
You can, and it is the classic mistake. The two are about 1,150 km apart, so combining them costs a flight, two transfers and most of a day, out of three. Pick one and use the time you saved on a day outside it.
What is the best day trip on a short Vietnam trip?
Ninh Binh from Hanoi, about 2 hours each way. The limestone rises out of rice fields and the rowing boats take 2 to 3 hours, which fits comfortably in a day. Ha Long as a day trip is 3 hours each way and buys about 4 hours on the water.
Do you still need a visa for a short trip?
Check before booking. Some nationalities have visa exemptions of 15 or 45 days and others need an e-visa regardless of how short the stay is, and the exemption lists change. The e-visa is applied for online before you fly.
