Hue to Hoi An is 140 km of the best road in Vietnam, and most people cross it in a van with the curtains shut. The pass, the lagoon and the beach at Lang Co are the reason to spend four hours on a two-hour journey.

What are the options from Hue to Hoi An?

Four ways cover this leg: a private car over the Hai Van pass, an easy rider on a motorbike, a shuttle bus through the tunnel, and the train as far as Da Nang with a short transfer at the end.

The difference is not speed. It is whether the journey is a transfer or the best half-day of the trip.

Why take the pass rather than the tunnel?

The Hai Van pass climbs to about 500 metres over 21 kilometres of switchbacks with the sea below it, and the tunnel underneath saves about twenty minutes. That is the whole trade.

Since the tunnel opened in 2005 the lorries go under the mountain, which left the pass quiet enough to enjoy. The Hai Van pass page covers the stops and the weather that decides whether the view exists.

Motorbikes are not allowed through the tunnel, so a rider takes the pass whatever the plan says.

What does a private car cost?

A car with a driver runs 1.2 to 1.8 million dong for the Hue to Hoi An leg with stops, which splits between up to four people. At about 26,000 dong to the US dollar that is 45 to 70 dollars for the car.

The stops are what you are paying for: the pass gate, Lang Co lagoon, the Marble Mountains and a beach break at Da Nang.

Agree the route and the stops before leaving, because a driver quoted door to door will take the tunnel unless told otherwise — the car and driver guide covers how these are booked.

Is the easy rider version worth it?

An easy rider carries you and a bag over the pass on the back of a motorbike for roughly the same price as a car, and it is the version people remember. The luggage follows in a van or on the rack.

The easy rider version suits anybody comfortable on a bike as a passenger and nobody who is not. The road is wet in the autumn, and the motorbike guide covers what riding here involves.

Riding it yourself is a separate decision, and the licence question in the travel insurance guide decides whether that is covered.

Where does the train fit?

The train runs Hue to Da Nang in about three hours along the seaward side of the ridge, and the 20 km between Kim Lien and Lang Co is the part people book it for.

The train does not reach Hoi An, which has no station, so the last 30 km is a taxi or a Grab of about 45 minutes — the Da Nang to Hoi An guide covers that leg.

Sit on the sea side, and take a daytime service. The train guide lists which ones run in daylight.

How long does Hue to Hoi An actually take?

Three hours by shuttle, three and a half by train and taxi, and four to six by car or bike with stops. The distance is 140 km and almost none of the time is distance.

Leaving Hue at eight puts a car in Hoi An by early afternoon with a swim at Lang Co on the way. Leaving at noon means the pass in the haze and an arrival after dark.

Weather decides the rest. In the wet months the pass can be inside a cloud, and the typhoon season guide explains when that is likely.

Which should you pick?

Take the car or the bike if the road matters, the train if the coast matters, and the shuttle only if the day is already lost to something else.

Hue to Hoi An is one of the few transfers in Vietnam worth building a day around, and the difference between the cheapest and the best option is about a million dong. The central Vietnam week sets out where that day fits.

FAQ

How far is Hue from Hoi An?

About 140 km, which is three hours by shuttle bus through the Hai Van tunnel and four to six hours by car or motorbike over the pass with stops. The distance is short; what varies is how much of the coast you stop for.

What is the best way to get from Hue to Hoi An?

A private car over the Hai Van pass at 1.2 to 1.8 million dong, split between up to four, if the road matters. The train to Da Nang plus a taxi is the cheapest comfortable option at under 150,000 dong plus the transfer, and the shuttle bus is for speed alone.

Is the Hai Van pass worth taking on the way?

Yes, on a clear day. The pass climbs to about 500 metres over 21 km of switchbacks above the sea, and the tunnel underneath saves only twenty minutes. It is the single best stretch of road in Vietnam and the reason to book a car rather than a bus.

Is there a train from Hue to Hoi An?

Not directly, because Hoi An has no station. The train runs Hue to Da Nang in about three hours along the coast, and the last 30 km to Hoi An is a taxi or Grab of about 45 minutes.

Can you ride a motorbike from Hue to Hoi An?

Yes, and the easy rider version — riding pillion while a driver takes the pass and your luggage follows — costs about the same as a car. Riding yourself needs a licence Vietnam recognises, which is the condition most travel insurance policies attach to motorbike cover.
