Things to do on Cat Ba, once the bay boat is booked

On this page
Cat Ba is usually treated as a bed with a boat attached. Arrive, sail Lan Ha for a day, leave. That works, and it wastes the 2.5 hours of bus and the crossing it took to get here.
The island runs to about 285 square kilometres and roughly half of it is national park. The things to do on Cat Ba that are not the bay are the reason to stay a second night.
What should you do first?
Book the bay for your first full morning and plan the rest around it. A Lan Ha Bay day boat is what the island is for. It carries the same limestone as Ha Long with a fraction of the fleet, leaves the town harbour between 08:00 and 09:00, and usually includes kayaking and a swimming stop.
The Cat Ba hub covers getting here and why the island beats a cruise for some trips.
| What | Where | Time | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lan Ha Bay day boat | Town harbour | A full day | The reason to be here |
| Ngu Lam peak, national park | 15 km north | Half a day | Yes, go early |
| Cannon fort | Above town | 1 hour | Yes, for the view |
| Cat Co beaches | Walk from town | An afternoon | Convenient, not special |
| Climbing, Butterfly Valley | 10 km out | Half a day | The best in Vietnam |
| Viet Hai village | Across the island | Half a day | With a bike or a boat |

What does the national park actually offer?
Forest, a viewpoint and one real trek. The park covers about half the island and sits inside a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The standard visit is the climb to Ngu Lam peak: about 1.5 hours up and back, steep in places, with a metal viewing platform over the interior at the top.
Go early. The forest is humid by 09:00 and the platform is small enough that four groups fill it. The longer crossing to Viet Hai village takes most of a day, and it is more interesting one way, with a boat or a bike covering the return.
Is the climbing worth planning around?
If you climb at all, yes. This is the best limestone in Vietnam. Butterfly Valley, about 10 km from town, has the bolted routes, and the sea cliffs of Lan Ha have the deep-water soloing, where the fall is into the bay.
Operators in town run beginner courses and day trips, and the season is the dry half of the year rather than the summer. Nothing else in the country comes close for this, which is why Cat Ba appears on climbing itineraries that ignore the rest of the north. The trekking guide covers the walking, which is a different sport here.
Are the beaches worth the walk?
As a swim between boat days, yes; as a base, rarely — where to stay sets out why the town beats the coves for most trips.
The beaches are worth the 20 minutes and not the planning. Cat Co 1, 2 and 3 sit just outside town, joined by a cliff path that is the nicest part of visiting them. All three are small, clean and full in July.
If sand is the point of your trip, the beaches guide sends you south. On Cat Ba the sea is scenery rather than a beach holiday, and the swimming stop on the boat is usually better than the town beaches anyway.
What is the cannon fort?
A hilltop battery above the harbour with the guns still on their mountings. The French built it, the Japanese and later the Vietnamese used it, and tunnels run into the hill behind. Entry is modest and the climb from town takes about 20 minutes.
Go for the view rather than the history. The harbour, the karst and the floating village line up from the ridge, and it is the best sunset on the island that needs no boat. The war sites guide covers the places where the history is the reason to go.
When should you be on the water?
March to May and September to November, and the mornings within them. The bay is calmest early, the day boats leave between eight and nine, and the afternoon light flattens the limestone.
Summer is hot, busy with domestic holidaymakers, and prone to storms that cancel sailings. December to February is cold, grey and quiet, and the karst in mist has its own case. The month-by-month guide sets the northern coast against the rest of the country.
How does it fit a northern trip?
Two nights, after Hanoi and before or instead of a Ha Long cruise. The one-week northern route shows where the island sits against Ninh Binh and the mountains.
Arrive by bus and boat, or by the cable car that opened in April 2024 and crosses in about 10 minutes. Give the first evening to the harbour rather than to a plan. Half the island's appeal is that nothing here needs booking more than a day ahead.
FAQ
What is there to do on Cat Ba besides the bay?
The national park, which covers about half the island, the quiet beaches at the edge of town, rock climbing on the limestone, and the fort above the harbour. The bay is the reason most people come, and it does not fill three days on its own.
Is the Cat Ba National Park worth a day?
Half a day, in practice. The Ngu Lam peak walk takes about an hour and a half up and back through forest, and the view over the interior is the point. The longer Viet Hai trek crosses the island and is better ridden in one direction and walked in the other.
Which boat trip should you take from Cat Ba?
A Lan Ha Bay day boat rather than a Ha Long transfer. Lan Ha carries the same limestone with a fraction of the fleet, the boats leave from the town harbour each morning, and most trips include kayaking through the karst and a swimming stop.
Are the beaches on Cat Ba any good?
Small and convenient rather than beautiful. Cat Co one, two and three sit within walking distance of the town, linked by a cliff path, and they are clean and busy in summer. Anyone wanting sand as the point of the trip should be somewhere else.
Is Cat Ba good for climbing?
It is the best rock climbing in Vietnam, on limestone above the sea at Butterfly Valley and on the deep-water solo routes in Lan Ha Bay. Operators in town run courses and day trips for beginners, and the season follows the dry months.
How many days do you need on Cat Ba?
Two nights, three if you want the park and the climbing as well as the bay. One night means arriving, taking a boat, and leaving, which works but wastes most of the journey time getting here.
What is the cannon fort?
A hilltop battery above the harbour, built by the French and used by the Japanese and later the Vietnamese, with the guns still in place and tunnels behind them. It is a twenty-minute climb from town and the harbour view from it is the best on the island.
