Phu Quoc or Con Dao: which island is your week

On this page
Phu Quoc or Con Dao is a choice between the developed Vietnamese island and the one that stayed quiet because it is harder to reach. Both sit off the southern coast and they have almost nothing else in common.
Which island should you pick?
Phu Quoc for a beach week that arranges itself: resorts at every price, restaurants, a cable car, easy flights and a 30-day visa exemption. Where to stay on Phu Quoc covers which end of it to book.
Con Dao for quiet, for the prison history, and for turtles. It costs more, has fewer flights, and empties completely after dinner.
| What | Phu Quoc | Con Dao |
|---|---|---|
| Getting there | International airport, ferries | Small aircraft, long ferry |
| Beds | Thousands, every tier | Few hundred |
| Cost | Competitive, wide range | Higher across the board |
| Visa | 30-day exemption for direct arrivals | Normal rules apply |
| Dry season | Nov-Apr | Mar-Sep |
| Diving | Easy to arrange, tired reefs | National park, green turtles |
| Evenings | Night market, bars, resorts | Almost nothing |
| History | Little on show | The prison, and it is heavy |

What is the real difference?
Development, and the seasons that follow from it. Phu Quoc has been built hard over the last decade: an international airport, a cable car to An Thoi that is among the longest over water anywhere, resorts along the west coast and a night market in Duong Dong.
Con Dao is an archipelago of sixteen islands with one small town on the largest, inside a national park that covers roughly 20,000 hectares of land and sea. There is no cable car and no strip. What there is: empty beaches, a road around the headlands, and the prison complex.
Which is easier to reach?
Phu Quoc, without argument. Direct international flights land there, domestic services run all day, and ferries cross from Ha Tien in about an hour and a half.
Con Dao is served by smaller aircraft from Ho Chi Minh City, about 55 minutes in the air, and by a ferry from Vung Tau or Soc Trang that takes four hours or more. Those flights are more prone to filling and to weather cancellations, which matters if you are connecting to an international departure.
Which island costs more?
Phu Quoc, and by more than most people expect. Competition among thousands of rooms keeps prices honest, and the accommodation guide tiers apply there normally.
On Con Dao everything arrives by boat or small plane, and the island holds a few hundred beds against Phu Quoc's tens of thousands. Rooms, food and beer all cost noticeably more, and there is no budget tier to speak of.
What about the visa?
The visa is the one hard rule that decides some trips. Phu Quoc carries a 30-day visa exemption for visitors who fly directly to the island and stay on it. Con Dao has no equivalent, so the usual requirements apply and most nationalities need the e-visa.
If your trip is only the island and you are short on visa days, that difference settles the question by itself.
When should you go to each?
The two islands sit about 400 km apart and their seasons do not agree. Phu Quoc is dry from November to April and takes the southwest monsoon from May to October. Con Dao's calm window runs March to September, and its sea is roughest from October to January.
The mismatch is useful rather than annoying. Between May and September, Con Dao is the better island; between November and February, Phu Quoc is. The month-by-month guide sets the southern calendar out in full.
Which is better underwater?
Con Dao. It sits inside a national park, the reefs are in better condition, and green turtles nest on the outer islands between May and October, which is a genuine wildlife event rather than a brochure line.
Phu Quoc's diving is easier to book and less rewarding, and the water around the An Thoi islands has taken heavy boat traffic. The diving guide compares both against the rest of the country.
Can you visit both islands?
Only with a week and a flight, and there is little reason to. They are similar enough in shape and different enough in season that one usually rules the other out on dates alone.
If the trip has room for one island and a mainland region, the southern week shows how that fits together.
FAQ
Should you go to Phu Quoc or Con Dao?
Phu Quoc for a straightforward beach week with resorts, restaurants and easy flights, and for the 30-day visa exemption. Con Dao for quiet, for the prison history and for turtle season, and if you accept fewer flights, higher prices and almost nothing to do after dark.
Which island is easier to reach?
Phu Quoc, by a wide margin. It has an international airport with frequent flights and ferries from Ha Tien and Rach Gia. Con Dao is served by smaller aircraft from Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho plus a long ferry, and flights fill and cancel more often.
Is Con Dao more expensive than Phu Quoc?
Usually yes, which surprises people. Con Dao has far fewer beds and everything arrives by boat or small plane, so rooms and food both cost more than the equivalent on Phu Quoc, where competition is fierce.
Do you need a visa for Phu Quoc or Con Dao?
