Where to stay on Phu Quoc, and what each end costs

On this page
Phu Quoc is about 50 km long, and the decision about where to stay on Phu Quoc is really a decision about how far you are willing to travel for dinner. The island sells itself on beaches; what separates one hotel from another is the ride to everything else.
The Phu Quoc hub covers the visa exemption and the seasons. This page is the map.
Where should you stay?
Long Beach if this is a first visit, Ong Lang if you have been to islands before, the north only if the hotel is the point.
| Where | Price a night | Outside the door | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long Beach, near Duong Dong | 400,000-1,200,000 | Restaurants, bars, the night market | First visits, eating out |
| Long Beach, southern stretch | 1,200,000-3,000,000 | Sand, resorts, fewer shops | Beach weeks with a scooter |
| Ong Lang | 800,000-2,000,000 | Quiet sand, sunsets, little else | Quiet without isolation |
| The north, Bai Dai and Ganh Dau | 2,500,000+ | The resort, and forest | Doing nothing, deliberately |
| Duong Dong town | 300,000-700,000 | Market, harbour, everyday prices | Budget, short stays |
What is Long Beach actually like?
Twenty kilometres of west-facing sand, with the island's hotels, restaurants and dive shops strung along it and Duong Dong town at the northern end. It is developed. It is also where you can walk out and choose between fifteen dinners.
The stretch nearest town is the cheapest and the noisiest. Further south it turns into resorts with gates and fewer places to walk to. Both ends are the same beach.
For a first visit that trade is worth taking. The things to do page is honest that the island's attractions are spread out, and a road with taxis on it saves an hour a day.
Is Ong Lang worth the extra ride?
If quiet matters more than choice. Ong Lang sits about 7 km north of Duong Dong: smaller places set back among the trees, the same west-facing sunsets, and a beach that never fills.
The cost is dinner. A handful of restaurants sit near the beach, your hotel has one, and anything else is a scooter ride or a taxi both ways. Two or three nights there works well. A week without transport starts to feel like a compound.
When is the north a mistake?
When you intended to see the island. The northern resorts sit 30 to 40 km from the airport, past the point where taxis are casual. The drive back into town after dark is nobody's idea of a holiday.
The northern resorts are good hotels on quiet sand, built for people who will not leave them. Book that on purpose or not at all. The Bai Dai strip near Cam Ranh makes the same argument on the mainland.

What about Bai Sao and the south?
Bai Sao has the best sand on Phu Quoc and almost nowhere to sleep. It sits in the southeast, an hour from Long Beach by road, and it works as a day out rather than a base.
The An Thoi cable car and the boat trips to the southern islands also start down there, so one day covers all three. Basing there instead leaves you a long way from everything else.
Does the season change the choice?
The season changes the price more than the place. December to February is the reliable stretch — clear skies, calm water, 27 to 30°C — and the island fills, especially over Tet.
From June into early October the southwest monsoon brings the heaviest rain and the west-coast sea turns rough. Rooms cost a fraction of the peak. In those months a hotel with an indoor bar earns its keep, and the far north stops making sense at all.
What should you check before booking?
The distance to Duong Dong, in kilometres rather than in minutes, and whether the beach in the photograph belongs to the hotel or is ten minutes away. Both are routinely vague in listings.
Check for a scooter too. Many places lend or rent them, and on this island that is the difference between a holiday and a taxi account. The accommodation guide has the national tiers, and Phu Quoc sits at the top of every one of them.
FAQ
Where is the best area to stay on Phu Quoc?
Long Beach for a first visit, Ong Lang for quiet without isolation, and the far north only if the hotel is the holiday. Long Beach runs about 20 km beside Duong Dong town and holds most of the island's hotels, restaurants and noise.
How much does a room on Phu Quoc cost?
A guesthouse near Duong Dong runs roughly 400,000 to 800,000 dong, a mid-range hotel with a pool 1,000,000 to 2,500,000, and the northern resorts a great deal more. Phu Quoc is the most expensive island in Vietnam for an equivalent room.
Is Ong Lang better than Long Beach?
Quieter, and about seven kilometres from the restaurants. Ong Lang faces west for the same sunsets, has smaller places set back in the trees, and asks for a scooter or a taxi every time you want dinner somewhere other than your hotel.
Should you stay in the north of Phu Quoc?
Only deliberately. The northern resorts sit 30 to 40 km from the airport and further from any restaurant you did not arrive with, so every meal is either the hotel's or a taxi ride. That suits a resort week and ruins a touring one.
Which end is best for the beach itself?
Bai Sao in the southeast has the best sand on the island and almost nowhere to sleep, so it is a day trip from wherever you are. The west-coast beaches are longer, busier and better for sunsets, which is what most people actually book for.
Do you need a scooter?
On Long Beach, no. Anywhere else, yes or a taxi budget. Distances on Phu Quoc are real. The island is about 50 km long, and hotels advertise themselves as minutes from a beach without mentioning how far they are from dinner.
When should you book?
For December to February, well ahead. That is the reliable stretch of the dry season and the island fills, particularly over Tet and the Western holidays. The wet months from June to early October are the cheapest and the least dependable.
