Vietnam in August, region by region

On this page
Vietnam in August is July with one more month of water in it. The north is wet, the south is wet in the afternoons, and the centre holds on to the end of its beach season.
What is the weather like in Vietnam in August?
August in the north is hot and wet, with Hanoi taking around 320 mm of rain and temperatures in the mid-thirties. Storms build through the afternoon and clear overnight.
The centre is at the end of its dry run. The first heavy days can arrive late in the month, and the sea starts to lose the flatness it has held since May.
The south is unchanged: dry mornings, an afternoon downpour of an hour or so, and a warm sea at about 29°C.
| Region | August | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| North | Wet, 32–35°C, storms | Green, cheap and humid |
| Sapa and the highlands | Wet, cooler, terraces filling | Rice turning towards gold late in the month |
| Centre | Hot, beach season ending | Still good until the last week |
| South | Afternoon rain, warm sea | Mornings work, evenings are fine |
Where should you go in August?
Head for the centre and the highlands. The central coast holds its beach weather through most of August, and Da Lat is cool and green while everywhere else is humid.
The north is at its greenest, and the terraces around Mu Cang Chai and Sapa begin to turn in the last week of the month. The rice year guide covers the timing.
The south is fine for cities and food, harder for beaches. Phu Quoc in August is wet in the afternoon and cheap in a way it never is in January.
What should you skip in August?
Skip a plan that cannot absorb rain. August is the second wettest month in the north, and an itinerary with one shot at Ha Long or Sapa is an itinerary that may miss.
Avoid the last week on the central coast if the weather matters, because that is when the wet season starts arriving there.
The delta is humid and mosquito-heavy in August, which makes it the weakest month for that region.
How busy is August, and what does it cost?
August carries the last of the domestic school holidays, so the central coast stays busy until the end of the month. Prices there hold at their summer level.
The north is cheap and quiet, and it is a good month to see Hanoi and Ninh Binh without crowds.
Foreign arrivals are at their annual low in August, which shows in the cultural sites more than in the beaches. The trip cost guide shows how wide the gap between the two gets.
What is on in August?
The seventh lunar month, the ghost month, usually falls across August, and Vu Lan — the day for honouring parents and ancestors — is its focal point. Offerings appear outside shops and houses through the month.
Some Vietnamese families avoid big decisions and travel during the ghost month, which the ghost month guide explains.
National Day on 2 September falls at the very end of the month in practice, with the domestic rush beginning in the last days of August.
What should you pack for August?
Pack the July list and add patience. Light clothes, a shell, a dry bag, shoes that dry and repellent are the working kit for a wet, hot month.
An extra shirt is worth the space, because nothing dries quickly in 90 per cent humidity.
Highland evenings still need a layer, which the packing guide covers alongside the rest of the three-climate problem.
Is the sea swimmable in August?
The central coast is swimmable for most of the month, with warm water and a sea that only starts to build late in August. The north is warm and busy, and the south is warm with rain most afternoons.
August is the last reliable month before the typhoon window opens in September, which the typhoon guide sets out in detail.
So is August a good time to visit Vietnam?
Vietnam in August is a wet month with two good arguments: the centre still works, and the country is cheap and empty of foreign visitors. What it cannot promise is a dry fortnight in the north or a beach holiday in the south. The best time to visit guide sets August against September, which is when the balance starts to shift again.
FAQ
Is August a good time to visit Vietnam?
August is wet in the north and the south and still good on the central coast until the last week. It is also the cheapest month for foreign visitors, with Hanoi and Ninh Binh quiet and rooms at their lowest, so it suits a flexible trip rather than a fixed one.
How much does it rain in Vietnam in August?
Hanoi takes around 320 mm across the month, which makes August the second wettest in the north after July. The rain comes as afternoon storms rather than continuous grey. The south keeps its dry-morning, wet-afternoon pattern and the centre stays dry until late in the month.
What is the ghost month in Vietnam?
The seventh lunar month, which usually falls across August, when offerings are burned for wandering souls and Vu Lan honours parents and ancestors. Some families avoid weddings, house moves and big purchases during it, and offerings appear on pavements outside shops all month.
Is the central coast still good in August?
For most of the month, yes. Da Nang, Hoi An and Nha Trang hold their beach weather through August and the sea only starts to build in the last week. That is also when the Vietnamese school holidays end and the coast empties.
Is August cheap in Vietnam?
It is one of the cheapest months for anything away from the central coast. Foreign arrivals are at their annual low, hotel rates in the north fall, and the only expensive corner of the country is the beach strip that domestic families are still using.
