Vietnam in February is the month the country celebrates and the month the weather turns. Tet falls here in most years, the northern drizzle starts to lift, and the south is dry and heating towards April.

What is the weather like in Vietnam in February?

February in the north is cool and brightening. The 13 to 17°C of January gives way to milder afternoons, the drizzle thins, and the first clear days arrive — though Hanoi can still be grey for a week at a time.

The centre turns dry through the month. Hue and Hoi An see the rain taper, the sea settles, and by late February the beaches start to make sense again.

The south is dry and warming, with daytime highs climbing from the high twenties towards the thirties by the end of the month.

Where should you go in February?

February suits everywhere except the northern mountains, and those too if blossom is the point. The south is still excellent, the centre is improving weekly, and the north is pleasant in the cities.

Da Lat and the central highlands are at their most comfortable, holding 14 to 23°C the way they do every month. The coffee country around Buon Ma Thuot is dry and easy to ride.

In the north, the valleys around Moc Chau and Bac Ha carry plum and cherry blossom in February, which is the one northern sight that belongs to this month alone.

What should you skip in February?

Travel in the week around Tet, unless the festival is the reason you came. Trains and internal flights sell out, fares triple, and small restaurants and family businesses close for several days.

The mountains remain cold and often fogged. Ha Giang in February is a ride in the cloud as often as not, and the Ha Giang page is clear about which months the road repays.

Central beaches are a coin toss until the last week. The sea is calming rather than calm.

How busy is February, and what does it cost?

Tet is the busiest domestic week of the year and it lands in February in most years — in 2027 the first day is 6 February, with the official holiday running roughly 3 to 11 February.

Foreign visitor numbers are high all month, because February is dry across most of the country. Hotel rates in the south hold near their peak and the centre starts to climb.

The week after Tet is one of the quietest of the year, and prices drop with it. Arriving then buys a country that has just tidied itself up and gone back to work.

What is on in February?

Tet, in most years, and nothing else comes close. The lunar new year runs five days as a public holiday and longer in practice, and the Tet guide covers what closes and how to travel through it.

Temple festivals follow it through the month, particularly in the north. The Perfume Pagoda festival begins on the sixth day of the first lunar month and runs into April, drawing pilgrims in the millions.

Blossom season in the northern valleys peaks in February, which the festivals guide puts alongside the rest of the calendar.

What should you pack for February?

Pack a jacket for the north and summer clothes for the south, as in January, but with less weight in the jacket. A fleece and a shell handle a northern February; a down layer is only needed above 1,000 metres.

The south needs sun cover more than rain cover this month. A hat matters by the end of February in the delta.

Add something presentable if the trip overlaps Tet, because invitations happen and Vietnamese families dress for the new year. The etiquette guide covers what turning up to a Tet table involves.

Is the sea swimmable in February?

In the south, yes, all month. In the centre, from about the third week, and it improves every day after that. The north is still out. Cat Ba and Ha Long are cool and grey, and the swimming season there does not open until May.

The beaches guide sets out the month each coast becomes swimmable, which is the single most useful table for a beach-led trip.

So is February a good time to visit Vietnam?

Vietnam in February is a good bet with one caveat the size of a week. The month is dry in the south, improving in the centre and reasonable in the north, which makes it one of the best months for a full-country route.

The caveat is Tet. Book around it or into it deliberately, and the month is excellent. Arrive inside it by accident and the trip becomes an exercise in finding an open restaurant — the best time to visit guide explains why that one date overrides the weather.

FAQ

Is February a good time to visit Vietnam?

February is one of the best months for a full-country route: the south is dry, the centre is drying out and the north is milder than January. The exception is the Tet week, when fares triple and small businesses close, so the month is excellent as long as those dates are handled deliberately.

When is Tet in February?

The lunar new year falls between late January and mid-February and moves each year. In 2027 the first day is Saturday 6 February and the official public holiday runs roughly 3 to 11 February. The practical shutdown is longer, because many businesses close early and reopen late.

What is the weather like in Hanoi in February?

Cool and brightening, warmer than January but not yet reliable. Grey spells still last several days and the drizzle has not finished, though clear afternoons become common by the end of the month. A jacket is still needed, a heavy one is not.

Can you go to the beach in Vietnam in February?

In the south all month, and in the centre from roughly the third week as the sea settles. The northern coast stays cool and grey, so Cat Ba and Ha Long are for scenery rather than swimming until May.

Is February expensive in Vietnam?

Prices are near their peak in the south and rise around Tet everywhere, then fall sharply in the week after it. Arriving just after the new year buys the cheapest and quietest week of the first quarter.
