Ma Pi Leng pass is the stretch of road the whole Ha Giang loop is ridden for. It is cut into a cliff several hundred metres above the Nho Que river, and the gorge below it is the single best view in northern Vietnam. The pass takes an hour to ride and deserves most of a day.

Where is Ma Pi Leng pass?

Ma Pi Leng pass runs between Dong Van and Meo Vac in Ha Giang province, close to the Chinese border in the far north of Vietnam. The road follows the cliffs above the Nho Que river for about 20 km, climbing to a summit viewpoint before dropping towards Meo Vac.

The pass is the third day of the usual loop. The circuit of about 350 km of mountain road starts and ends in Ha Giang city, and the four-day Ha Giang itinerary gives the pass its own short day.

What makes the view so famous?

The view is famous for its scale. From the road the Nho Que river appears as a thin green-blue ribbon at the bottom of a gorge several hundred metres deep, with bare limestone peaks rising on the far side and villages clinging to the slopes.

The road itself is part of the story. It was built largely by hand in the 1960s by thousands of young volunteers from across the northern provinces, and it is still called the Happiness Road. A monument at the summit remembers them.

Where should you stop on the pass?

Stop at the summit viewpoint first, where a cafe and a small monument stand above the deepest part of the gorge. It is the classic photograph of the pass and the busiest place on it, so arrive early in the day.

Several unmarked pull-offs further along give the same view with fewer people, and the stretch towards Meo Vac shows the river bending below. Park fully off the road at each one, since trucks and minibuses take the bends quickly.

Can you see the gorge from the river?

The gorge can be seen from the river on a boat trip through the Tu San canyon on the Nho Que, below the pass. A steep side road leads down from the Meo Vac side to the jetty, and the trip lasts about an hour between vertical limestone walls.

The boat is the only way to understand how deep the gorge is. Operators include it on most four-day loops, and it adds a couple of hours to the day on the pass.

When is Ma Pi Leng at its best?

Ma Pi Leng is at its best from September to November, when the air is clearest after the rains and buckwheat flowers turn the slopes pink in October and November. Spring is also good, with blossom in February and March.

Winter mornings from December to February are often lost in fog, and the view can vanish for the whole day. Summer brings heavy rain and the risk of landslides that close the road. The Ha Giang guide sets out which months the mountain roads stay open.

Is the pass safe to ride yourself?

The pass is paved, and barriers protect most of the exposed stretches, but it is narrow, steep and shared with trucks and buses. Fog, rain and loose gravel on the hairpins are the real hazards. Inexperienced riders are safer as passengers with a local driver.

The Sapa or Ha Giang guide and the motorbiking guide cover that choice in detail. A rider concentrating on a wet hairpin sees less of Ma Pi Leng than a passenger does, which is the plain argument for sitting behind someone.

What do you need before going?

Foreign visitors need a Border Area Entry Permit for the Ha Giang loop districts, which the pass runs through. The permit costs about 250,000 dong and is usually arranged by the tour operator as part of the booking.

The Hanoi to Ha Giang guide covers getting to the start of the loop, and the Ha Giang guide explains the permit in full. Carry warm layers even in autumn, since the summit is cold and windy early in the morning.
