Hanoi to Ha Giang, and why it is a night bus

On this page
Hanoi to Ha Giang is a road journey and nothing else. There is no airport, no useful railway and no short cut: six to seven hours north, usually overnight, and the choice is what you sleep in.
How do you get from Hanoi to Ha Giang?
Two services cover the route: a sleeper bus with flat berths and a limousine minivan with reclining seats. Both leave Hanoi in the evening and arrive in Ha Giang city early the next morning, and both take six to seven hours.
Daytime departures exist on both and are less common, because the point of the night service is to arrive in time to start riding.
| Way | Cost | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleeper bus, night | 250,000–350,000 dong | 6–7 hours | Flat berths, arrives 4–6am |
| Limousine minivan | 300,000–450,000 dong | 6–7 hours | Reclining seats, hotel pickup |
| Private car | 2.5–3.5 million dong | About 6 hours | Door to door, split between four |
Why does almost everybody take the night bus?
The night bus saves a day and a hotel. It leaves Hanoi between about seven and nine in the evening, arrives in Ha Giang between four and six in the morning, and puts riders on a bike by eight.
Hostels in Ha Giang city expect that arrival. Most let you shower, leave a bag and eat breakfast before the loop starts, which is what makes the overnight work.
The Ha Giang page covers the loop itself, the permit and whether to ride it yourself.
What is the sleeper bus like?
A Vietnamese sleeper bus has two decks of flat berths rather than seats, each about 1.8 metres long, with a blanket and a curtain. Shoes come off at the door and go into a bag.
The lower berths are steadier and the rear ones bounce. Ask for a middle berth on the lower deck when booking, and the sleeper bus guide covers the rest of the etiquette.
Bring earplugs and something warm. The air conditioning runs cold and the horn is a working instrument on that road.
When is the limousine worth the extra?
A limousine minivan costs 50,000 to 150,000 dong more and gives a proper seat, a seatbelt and hotel pickup in the Old Quarter. Nine to sixteen passengers rather than forty.
The limousine suits anybody who cannot sleep flat on a bus, and anybody travelling with a large bag that needs watching.
Book a day ahead in the buckwheat season of late October and November, when the route fills — the November page explains why that month is busy.
What time should you leave?
Leave Hanoi in the evening if the loop starts the next morning, and in the morning if it does not. A 7pm departure reaches Ha Giang around 3 or 4am, which is early even by local standards.
Later departures at 9 or 10pm arrive at a more civilised hour and cost the same. Ask for the arrival time rather than the departure time when booking.
Coming back, the night bus from Ha Giang leaves around 7pm and reaches Hanoi before dawn, which works badly with an early flight and well with a late one.
What does the road look like?
The road climbs steadily for the last two hours and the last stretch is winding. Anybody prone to motion sickness should take something before boarding rather than after.
Rest stops happen once or twice, usually at a roadside kitchen with a toilet and instant noodles.
Landslides close sections after heavy rain in the summer months, which the typhoon season guide covers along with the rest of the wet season.
Is Hanoi to Ha Giang worth the night?
Hanoi to Ha Giang is six or seven hours in each direction for a loop that takes three or four days, and nobody who has ridden it counts the bus as a cost.
Take the night service in both directions and the journey costs two nights of sleep rather than two days of the trip. The four days in Ha Giang route is built on exactly that arithmetic.
FAQ

By road only. A sleeper bus or a limousine minivan takes six to seven hours, both usually overnight, leaving Hanoi in the evening and arriving in Ha Giang city between four and six in the morning. There is no airport and no useful railway.
How much does the bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang cost?
A sleeper bus berth costs 250,000 to 350,000 dong and a limousine minivan seat 300,000 to 450,000. A private car for the same route runs 2.5 to 3.5 million dong, which is worth splitting between four.
Is the night bus to Ha Giang safe and comfortable?
It is the standard way and most travellers sleep on it. Berths are flat and about 1.8 metres long, the air conditioning runs cold, and the last two hours are winding. Take earplugs, a warm layer and something for motion sickness if you are prone to it.
What time does the bus arrive in Ha Giang?
Between four and six in the morning for an evening departure. Hostels in Ha Giang city expect that hour and will let you shower, store a bag and eat before the loop starts, which is why the overnight service is the normal choice.
Should you take the limousine instead of the sleeper bus?
Take it if you cannot sleep lying flat on a moving bus or if you want hotel pickup and a seatbelt. It costs 50,000 to 150,000 dong more and carries nine to sixteen people rather than forty, and it takes the same six to seven hours.
