Ha Long Bay

On this page
Ha Long Bay carries about 1,969 islands and has been a UNESCO site since 1994, listed a second time in 2000 for its geology. It is the most photographed place in Vietnam and the one most likely to disappoint. The reason is almost always the same: people book the name without checking which water they will actually sail.
Everything on the site about the bay is collected here.
Why is it three bays?
Because operators sell "Ha Long Bay" as one destination and three authorities administer it as several. Ha Long Bay proper, Bai Tu Long to its north-east and Lan Ha to its south-west share one coast and one limestone. They belong to different authorities and take very different amounts of traffic.
Ha Long Bay proper absorbs most of the boats. Bai Tu Long and Lan Ha are quieter. A cruise into either is still advertised as a Ha Long Bay cruise, because that is the name people search for.
The practical consequence is one question worth asking an operator before booking: which bay does the boat actually sail into, and where does it moor overnight. The answer changes the trip more than the star rating does.

How big is Ha Long Bay?
About 1,553 square kilometres holding roughly 1,600 limestone islands and islets, most of them uninhabited. UNESCO listed the bay in 1994 and extended the listing in 2023 to take in the Cat Ba archipelago next door.
The scale is why the three bays feel so unlike each other: a cruise covers a small fraction of it, and which fraction decides the trip.
Day trip or overnight?
Overnight, unless the alternative is not going at all. The bay is two to two and a half hours from Hanoi each way. A day trip therefore spends five hours on the road for a few midday hours on the water, when every other day boat is out.
What an overnight buys is the two hours a day trip cannot reach: dusk, and first light before the fleet moves. That is the bay people photograph, and it is not available between eleven and three.
Getting here is its own decision, and the Hanoi to Ha Long guide prices the coach, the limousine minivan, a private car and the cruise shuttle against each other.
What should a cruise cost?
Between about 120 and 300 US dollars a person for two days and one night. The boat rather than the bay explains most of that spread. A day trip runs 25 to 90 and buys a smaller thing.
| Boat class | Two days, one night | What it buys |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | From about 105 USD | A berth, a bay, a crowded route |
| Mid-range | 145–250 USD | Four-star boat, smaller groups, usually a quieter bay |
| Upper | From about 300 USD | Space, food, and the itineraries that avoid the traffic |
| Day trip | 25–90 USD | The drive, and the middle of the day on the water |
The cruise prices above are 2026 figures, and they move with season and demand. The bay ticket itself is 40,000 dong, with 30,000 to 50,000 more for caves and fishing villages. Sung Sot is the cave most routes include. Usually bundled, occasionally not, and worth confirming rather than assuming.
What can go wrong?
Weather, and nothing argues with it. Operators cancel sailings when a storm approaches, and none of them will sail around one. A plan that depends on a boat needs a spare day behind it.
October to April is the dry half of the northern year, and October to December tends to give the clearest air before winter haze settles. Our region-by-region calendar covers how the north's year runs.
What is the alternative?
Cat Ba island, or Ninh Binh inland. Cat Ba sits at the Lan Ha end and suits anyone who would rather sleep on land than on a boat, and the quieter kayaking is at that end too.
Cat Ba is three and a half to five hours from Hanoi by bus, ferry and cable car, and things to do on Cat Ba covers what fills the days once the boat is booked.
Ninh Binh is the other substitution, and a genuinely different trip. The same geology stands in rice fields rather than water, an hour and a half from Hanoi, seen from a rowing boat.
How does it fit a trip?
One night, taken out of Hanoi. On our ten-day itinerary the bay is days three and four. On the week in the north it is the half of the trip that competes with the mountains.
The bay is a return journey from Hanoi on either route, not a stop on the way somewhere. Worth knowing before you draw it on a map as a point between two others.
FAQ
How much does a Ha Long Bay cruise cost?
A two-day, one-night cruise runs roughly 120 to 300 US dollars a person in 2026. Budget boats start near 105, four-star boats sit between 145 and 250, and the top end begins around 300. A day trip is 25 to 90, and buys you the drive rather than the bay at dawn.
Is a day trip to Ha Long Bay enough?
Only if the alternative is not going. The bay is two to two and a half hours from Hanoi each way, so a day trip spends five hours on the road for a few hours on the water, and misses the two things an overnight is for — the bay at dusk and at first light, with no other boats moving.
What is the difference between Ha Long, Bai Tu Long and Lan Ha bays?
Administration and crowding, not scenery. All three carry the same limestone and sail from the same area, but Ha Long Bay proper takes most of the traffic. Bai Tu Long and Lan Ha are quieter, and cruises into them are still advertised as Ha Long Bay cruises.
Is there an entrance fee for Ha Long Bay?
Yes, and it is usually inside the cruise price. The bay ticket is 40,000 dong, with separate admissions of 30,000 to 50,000 for caves and fishing villages. Check what your operator has included rather than assuming.
When should you not go to Ha Long Bay?
When a storm is forecast. Operators cancel sailings and none will sail around one, so a boat-dependent plan needs a spare day behind it. October to April is the dry half of the northern year, and October to December tends to give the clearest air.
