Hanoi to Ha Long Bay: which transfer is worth paying for

On this page
Ha Long Bay is close enough to Hanoi that the transfer is an afterthought, and far enough that getting it wrong costs a morning. The expressway put the bay two to two and a half hours from the Old Quarter, and the only real question is what you pay for those hours.
Which transfers actually run?
Four options carry people from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay: the public coach, the limousine minivan, a private car, and the shuttle sold with a cruise. All four use the same expressway and arrive within half an hour of each other.
| Transfer | Cost per person | Door to door | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public coach | 120,000–200,000 dong | About 3 hours, plus a taxi | Travelling cheap with light luggage |
| Limousine minivan | 250,000–350,000 dong | 2.5–3 hours with pickup | Most independent travellers |
| Cruise shuttle | Often bundled, or 400,000–600,000 dong | Timed to check-in | Anyone on an overnight boat |
| Private car | 1.2–1.8 million dong per car | 2–2.5 hours | Families, groups of four |
The coach is the cheap floor and the private car is the ceiling. Between them the limousine minivan does what most people want, which is to be collected from a hotel and dropped at a marina.
Is the minivan worth the extra?
The minivan is worth roughly twice the coach fare, because of what it removes rather than what it adds. Nine to sixteen reclining seats, a fixed price, hotel pickup in the Old Quarter, and a drop at Tuan Chau or Bai Chay instead of a bus station.
The coach lands at Bai Chay bus station, which is a taxi ride from the water. That taxi, plus the walk to the station in Hanoi, eats most of the saving for anyone travelling with a suitcase.
Book the minivan a day ahead in season. Seats sell, and the early-morning departures go first because everybody with a cruise needs the same hour. The getting around guide covers how these services work across the country.
What does a cruise shuttle change?
A cruise shuttle is a minivan with the timing guaranteed. The operator knows the check-in and holds the boat for its own bus, which is the thing you are actually buying.
Most overnight cruises either include the transfer or sell it as an add-on of roughly 400,000 to 600,000 dong each way. Compare that with a limousine seat before assuming the bundle is the better deal.
The risk with arranging your own is narrow but real. Miss an 11:30 check-in and the boat sails, because the itinerary is timed around lunch on the water — see the Ha Long Bay page for what an overnight is actually for.
Can you take the train?
No train serves this route usefully. A line towards Ha Long exists and carries almost no passenger traffic, with no useful connection to the marinas, so nobody plans around it.
A useless railway is unusual in Vietnam, where the Reunification line still makes a case for itself on most long routes. Ha Long is the exception: the expressway is faster than any rail option would be.
Coaches and minivans run every half hour through the morning, so the road absorbs everything.
What about the seaplane?
A seaplane has flown Hanoi to Ha Long Bay in about 45 minutes, landing on the water near Tuan Chau. It costs several million dong a seat, which is ten times the minivan.
The seaplane is sold as sightseeing rather than transport, and it behaves that way. Flights depend on weather and on enough passengers, and the season the typhoon guide describes cancels them regularly.
Book it as the thing you came to do, not as the way you get to a boat you have already paid for.
What time should you leave?
Leave Hanoi by eight if a cruise is waiting. Overnight boats check in between about 11:30 and 12:30, the road takes two to two and a half hours, and shared services spend half an hour collecting people from hotels first.
Coming back, cruises dock late morning and the shuttles reach Hanoi mid-afternoon. Do not book a train south or a flight out before about six in the evening on that day.
Traffic out of Hanoi is worst between seven and half past eight on a weekday, which the expressway only partly solves. A public holiday weekend is a different problem altogether — the public holidays guide lists the dates when this road fills.
Is a day trip worth it?
A day trip is worth it only if the alternative is not going. The bay is two to two and a half hours each way, so the day spends about five hours on the road for a few hours on the water, in the middle of the day when every other day boat is out.
What that misses is the reason people come: the bay at dusk and at first light, with nothing else moving. An overnight costs more and delivers a different place.
If the schedule really allows one day, consider Ninh Binh instead. Same limestone, no boat timetable, and it works as a day out of Hanoi in a way the bay does not.
Should you go to Cat Ba instead?
Cat Ba is the better base for anyone who would rather sleep on land. The island sits at the Lan Ha end of the same limestone, and the boats there work a quieter water than the main bay.
Getting there takes longer: three and a half to five hours from Hanoi by bus, ferry and cable car, against two and a half for Ha Long city. That is the trade, and for two nights it is usually worth it.
Day boats out of Cat Ba cover Lan Ha Bay and part of Ha Long for less than the equivalent from Tuan Chau, and the kayaking guide explains why that end of the water suits a paddle.
FAQ
How long does it take to get from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay?
Two to two and a half hours by road, on an expressway that runs almost the whole way. Add half an hour for hotel pickups in the Old Quarter, which most shared services do before leaving the city, and another fifteen minutes at the far end to reach the cruise marina.
What is the cheapest way to get to Ha Long Bay?
A public coach from My Dinh or Gia Lam bus station to Bai Chay, which costs roughly 120,000 to 200,000 dong and takes about three hours. You then need a taxi to the marina. It is the cheapest option by a wide margin and the least convenient with luggage.
What is a limousine bus in Vietnam?
A nine to sixteen-seat minivan with reclining seats, sold at a fixed price per seat with hotel pickup included. On this route it costs about 250,000 to 350,000 dong per person and is the option most independent travellers take, because it goes door to marina without a transfer.
Is there a train from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay?
Not one worth planning around. A railway line exists towards Ha Long but carries almost no passenger service, and it does not connect usefully with the bay's marinas. Everybody travels this route by road, and the expressway made that permanent.
What time should you leave Hanoi for a Ha Long cruise?
By eight in the morning. Overnight cruises check in between about 11:30 and 12:30, and the transfer takes two to two and a half hours plus pickups. Shared shuttles booked with a cruise leave the Old Quarter around eight for exactly this reason.
Can you fly from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay?
A seaplane service has run the route in about 45 minutes, landing on the water near Tuan Chau, at several million dong per seat. It flies on weather and demand rather than a dependable timetable, so treat it as a scenic extra rather than a transfer you can build a booking around.
