Vietnam in April, region by region

On this page
Vietnam in April is two different warnings. The south reaches its annual peak of heat, above 35°C most afternoons, and the last days of the month carry the biggest domestic holiday after Tet.
What is the weather like in Vietnam in April?
April in the south is the hottest month of the year, with daytime highs regularly above 35°C and humidity to match. Ho Chi Minh City and the delta run hot from mid-morning to late afternoon, and the first storms of the wet season arrive at the very end of the month.
The north is warm and increasingly humid, with clear spells and rising temperatures as the month goes on.
The centre is dry and building heat, which makes April one of its better months for the beach before the summer crowds arrive.
| Region | April | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| North | Warm, humid by month end | Good, but the clarity of March is fading |
| Sapa and the highlands | Mild, 15–22°C | Comfortable trekking, green valleys |
| Centre | Dry, building heat | Beach season with space on the sand |
| South | 35°C+, dry until late | Plan around the middle of the day |
Where should you go in April?
Head for the centre and the north. Hoi An, Da Nang and Quy Nhon are dry and hot without the July crowds, and the northern mountains are green and clear enough for a ride.
The highlands are the escape from the southern heat. Da Lat holds 14 to 23°C every month of the year, which in April is a twenty-degree difference from the delta.
The south still works if the days are planned around the heat: early mornings, a long lunch indoors, and evenings outside. The Mekong Delta is harder work in April than in January.
What should you skip in April?
Avoid travelling on 30 April and 1 May without a booking. Reunification Day and Labour Day fall together, and with the weekend and a swapped working day they usually become a four or five-day break that fills every coastal hotel and internal flight.
Skip the middle of the day in the south. Walking tours, markets and the delta boats are all unpleasant between eleven and three in April heat.
Long motorbike days in the far north are fine, though the humidity builds through the month and the afternoon storms begin.
How busy is April, and what does it cost?
April is quiet until the last week and then it is not. Foreign numbers ease as the spring season ends, and domestic travel explodes around the 30 April holiday.
Resort prices on the coast double for that weekend, and internal flights sell out days in advance. The public holidays guide lists the dates and the swapped working days that decide how long the block runs.
Outside that week, April is one of the better value months in the centre, with high-season weather at shoulder-season prices.
What is on in April?
The Hung Kings commemoration falls on the tenth day of the third lunar month, which puts it in April in most years, and fills Den Hung in Phu Tho with a genuine pilgrimage.
Reunification Day on 30 April and Labour Day on 1 May close offices and banks and put the country on the road.
Round-number anniversaries add parades: the fiftieth anniversary of reunification in April 2025 closed central roads in Ho Chi Minh City for the event and for the rehearsals before it.
What should you pack for April?
Pack for heat, and add one layer for the highlands. Light, loose clothes, a hat and sun cream do most of the work, and long trousers are still needed for temples.
A rain shell earns its place from the last week of April, when the southern storms start arriving in the afternoon.
Swimwear matters this month everywhere south of Hue. The packing guide covers what the three climates need in the same bag.
Is the sea swimmable in April?
The sea is swimmable and warm from Hue southwards, and the central coast is at its most comfortable before the summer heat. Water temperatures off Da Nang and Nha Trang sit in the high twenties.
The northern coast is finally warming. Cat Ba and Ha Long become swimmable towards the end of April, though the water is cooler than anywhere further south.
April is the first month of the year when the whole coast works, which the beaches guide sets against the rest of the calendar.
So is April a good time to visit Vietnam?
Vietnam in April is a good month with two dates on it. The weather is dry almost everywhere, the centre is at its best, and the north is green and clear.
The heat in the south and the 30 April holiday are the two things to plan around, and both are predictable. The best time to visit guide sets April against the months either side of it.
