Vietnam in May is the month the north fills its terraces with water and the south starts its afternoon rain. Between them, the central coast has the flattest sea of the year.

What is the weather like in Vietnam in May?

May in the north is hot and humid with the first storms of the summer, and the terraced valleys are flooded for planting. Daytime temperatures reach the low thirties, nights stay above 25°C, and Hanoi takes about 190 mm of rain across the month.

The south moves into the wet season. Rain arrives in the afternoon, falls hard for an hour and clears, which is the pattern it keeps until November.

The centre is dry and hot with a flat sea and water near 28°C, the start of its best stretch for beaches and boats.

Where should you go in May?

Go to the terraces and the central coast. Mu Cang Chai and the valleys around Sapa flood their fields for transplanting in May, and the mirrored terraces are the photograph the north is known for.

Da Nang, Hoi An and Quy Nhon start their best season in May, with a calm sea and the crowds still a month away.

The south works in the mornings. Rain in the delta and Ho Chi Minh City arrives in the afternoon, so the day gets planned around a two-hour gap rather than abandoned.

What should you skip in May?

Skip an all-day outdoor plan in the south without a fallback. The afternoon downpour is reliable rather than occasional, and the rainy day guide covers what still works when it lands.

Avoid the 30 April to 1 May holiday tail in the first days of the month, when the coast is still full of domestic travellers and prices have not come down.

Long treks in the far north are hot work in May, and the storms that arrive with the heat can close mountain roads for a day.

How busy is May, and what does it cost?

May is one of the quietest and cheapest months of the year once the first week is past. Foreign visitor numbers drop after the spring season, and the summer domestic rush has not started.

Hotel rates in the north and the delta fall to their annual floor — a room that costs 900,000 dong in March can be 500,000 in May — and the central coast is still at shoulder prices before June.

The exception is the first three or four days, which carry the tail of the Labour Day block. The trip cost guide shows what a fortnight costs in a cheap month against a peak one.

What is on in May?

Labour Day on 1 May opens the month with a public holiday and a crowded coast, and the country goes back to work within the week.

Buddha's birthday, Phat Dan, falls on the fifteenth day of the fourth lunar month, usually in May, and fills the pagodas — the pagodas guide covers where that is most visible.

In the north, May is planting season, which is a working landscape rather than a festival and the reason the terraces look the way they do.

What should you pack for May?

Pack light clothes, a rain shell and shoes that dry. May is warm everywhere, wet in the afternoons in the south and humid in the north.

An umbrella is less useful than a hooded shell on a pavement of parked scooters, and a dry bag matters if the plan includes boats.

Insect repellent earns its place from May onward, when the wet season begins and mosquito numbers climb. The health guide covers what that means in practice.

Is the sea swimmable in May?

The central coast is at its best in May, with a flat sea and water in the high twenties from Hue to Nha Trang. Day boats run reliably and the visibility for snorkelling is good.

The northern coast opens in May too — Cat Ba, Ha Long and the northern beaches become properly swimmable this month.

The south is swimmable but interrupted, because the rain arrives most afternoons. Phu Quoc in May is cheaper than in January for exactly that reason.

So is May a good time to visit Vietnam?

Vietnam in May is the best value month on the calendar for anybody who can work around an afternoon shower. The centre is excellent, the north is green and flooded, and the prices are the lowest of the year.

What it is not is a guaranteed-dry month for a southern trip. The best time to visit guide sets May against the dry-season months, and the difference is money as much as weather.

FAQ

Is May a good time to visit Vietnam?

May is the best value month of the year for travellers who can plan around an afternoon shower. The central coast has its flattest sea, the northern terraces are flooded and green, and hotel prices in the north and the delta are at their annual floor.

Is it raining in Vietnam in May?

In the south, yes, from about the middle of the month: heavy rain for an hour in the afternoon and then a clear evening. The north gets its first summer storms and the centre stays dry, which is why May suits a central and northern route better than a delta one.

When are the rice terraces flooded in Vietnam?

May, for transplanting, when the terraces around Mu Cang Chai, Sapa and Ha Giang are filled with water and mirror the sky. The gold harvest look is September and October, so the two most photographed states of the same fields are four months apart.

Is May expensive in Vietnam?

May is one of the cheapest months of the year once the Labour Day tail clears in the first week. Foreign numbers drop after the spring season and the Vietnamese school holidays have not started, so rooms in the north and the delta are at their lowest.

Can you swim in Vietnam in May?

Yes, the length of the country. The central coast is at its best with water in the high twenties, the northern beaches open this month, and the south is swimmable between showers. May is the first month when every coast works at once.
