Ti Top island, the viewpoint and the beach in Ha Long Bay

On this page
Ti Top island is the stop on a Ha Long Bay cruise where you see the bay from above. A long staircase climbs from a small beach to a viewpoint over the karst islands. The photograph from the top is the one most visitors take home. Choosing between the climb and the swim is the only decision.
Where is Ti Top island?
Ti Top island lies in Ha Long Bay, about two hours by boat from the harbours at Tuan Chau and Bai Chay. It is on the bay's second standard sightseeing route, which also includes Sung Sot cave and Luon cave.
Most day cruises and overnight cruises on that route stop at Ti Top, usually for about an hour. Boats tie up at a floating pier beside the beach, and the staircase starts at the back of the sand.
How hard is the climb to the viewpoint?
The climb to the viewpoint is roughly 400 to 450 steps, and it takes fifteen to twenty minutes at a steady pace. The steps are steep and uneven in places, with railings, and most of the route is in full sun.
A small pavilion stands at the top, with a view over the bay's islands, the moored boats below and the beach. It is crowded in the middle of the day, with people waiting for a clear spot at the rail. Carry water and go up early in the stop, before the crowd from the next boat arrives.
The climb does not suit anyone with knee or heart trouble, and there is no other way up. Those who stay below can walk the beach or sit at the kiosk by the pier. The view from the boat deck as it pulls away is a reasonable substitute for the one from the top.
Can you swim at Ti Top?
Swimming at Ti Top is allowed on the small crescent beach at the foot of the island, within a roped area. Changing rooms and showers stand at the back of the beach, and the water is calm on most days.
The sand is fine but narrow, and at midday it is packed. Most boats do not leave time to climb and swim, so decide which before landing. The beach safety guide explains why a roped area matters even on flat water.
Why is it called Ti Top island?
The island carries the name of Gherman Titov, the Soviet cosmonaut and second person to orbit the Earth. He visited Ha Long Bay with Ho Chi Minh in 1962. Ti Top is the Vietnamese spelling of his name, and a statue of him stands near the beach.
The naming is a small reminder of the Cold War alliances of the time. The war sites guide covers the later history of the same years in the north.
When is Ti Top least crowded?
Ti Top is least crowded early in the morning and late in the afternoon, outside the midday window when day boats from the harbours arrive together. Overnight cruises sometimes stop at the island at sunset or at dawn, when the steps and the beach are almost empty.
Ask the operator when the stop happens before booking. The Ha Long Bay guide sets out what a cruise should cost, and the Hanoi to Ha Long Bay guide explains the timing of the day boats.
Is Ti Top worth the stop?
Ti Top is worth the stop for the view from the top, which shows the scale of the bay better than any boat deck. The beach is pleasant rather than special, and on a hot, crowded day the climb is the better use of the hour.
Lan Ha Bay is the quieter water, where the same limestone sees far fewer visitors. The Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh guide and Cat Ba set out those alternatives.
