Where to stay in Nha Trang: the strip or the streets behind it

On this page
Where to stay in Nha Trang is a decision about one road. Tran Phu runs the length of the beach and the towers stand along it. Everything behind that road costs less for the same distance to the sea.
The beach is public for all 6 km of it, which is the fact the pricing quietly depends on you not noticing.
Where should you stay in Nha Trang?
Stay two or three streets back from the beach road, in the grid around Hung Vuong and Biet Thu. The walk to the sand is the same five minutes, the rooms cost roughly half the seafront rate, and the restaurants are the ones the city eats in rather than the ones with menus in four languages. The Nha Trang hub covers what the town is for; this page is the address.
| Where | Price a night | Outside the door | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tran Phu seafront | 1,800,000+ | The beach, towers, resorts | Sea views, short stays |
| Backstreet grid, Hung Vuong and Biet Thu | 300,000-900,000 | Restaurants, bars, dive shops | Most visitors |
| North end, towards Po Nagar | 400,000-1,000,000 | Towers, the river, quiet | Slower stays |
| Across the river, Vinh Phuoc | 250,000-600,000 | Everyday Nha Trang | Long stays, budget |
| Bai Dai, near Cam Ranh airport | 2,000,000+ | Empty sand, resorts | Resort holidays, early flights |
What does the seafront actually buy?
A balcony, and very little else. The beach is municipal and open along its whole length, so a room on Tran Phu buys no access that a room three streets inland does not already have.
The balcony is worth paying for if you will sit on it at six in the morning with a coffee. It is worth nothing if you leave at eight. The gap runs to roughly double for an equivalent room, which over a week is the price of the diving.
Why is the grid behind the beach the value?
Because it holds the density. The blocks around Hung Vuong, Biet Thu and Nguyen Thien Thuat carry the hostels, the mid-range hotels, the dive shops and most of the eating, packed tightly enough that everything is a walk.
Rooms there run 300,000 to 900,000 dong for air conditioning and a lift, against 1,800,000 and up on the front. The trade is noise rather than distance. This is also where the bars are, and a room facing a busy corner hears them until late.

Who should stay at the north end?
Anyone who wants the city without the strip. North of the river, around the Po Nagar towers and the Hon Chong headland, the towers thin out and the streets turn residential.
The north end is quieter, cheaper and about fifteen minutes from the middle of the beach by Grab. Fifteen minutes each way after dinner is a real tax on a two-night stay. The things to do page puts most of the day back in the centre or on a boat from it.
When is the airport strip the right answer?
For a resort week, or for a flight before eight in the morning. Bai Dai runs south from the city towards Cam Ranh airport, about 30 km out, and it is a long empty stretch of sand with large resorts spaced along it.
Bai Dai is a different holiday from Nha Trang. Nothing is walkable, dinner is whatever the resort serves, and a trip into the city runs 40 minutes each way. Book it deliberately or not at all. The mistake is booking it because the photographs looked like the town.
Does the season change where you stay?
The season changes what a beach room is worth. The dry, flat-sea half of the year runs from about February to September, and March to June is the best of it.
From October to December the rain arrives and the swell closes the boat days. In those months a sea view is worth nothing and the backstreets are worth exactly what they were. The month-by-month guide explains why this coast disagrees with the southern islands, which are dry when Nha Trang is not.
What should you check before booking?
Which way the room faces, and how far along the beach the address really is. "Nha Trang beach" covers 6 km, and the difference between the middle and the far north is a bridge and a taxi.
Check the pool as well. Mid-range hotels here compete on rooftop pools, and half of those pools are the size of a large bath. If the sea is the point, beach safety covers the flags this coast flies from September. Expect the desk to take your passport at check-in too: that is the legal guest registration the national accommodation guide describes, not a deposit.
FAQ
Where is the best area to stay in Nha Trang?
Two or three streets back from the beach road, in the grid around Hung Vuong and Biet Thu. The sand stays a five-minute walk away, the rooms cost half what the seafront towers charge, and the restaurants down there are the ones the city actually eats in.
Is it worth paying for a sea view in Nha Trang?
Only if you will use the balcony. A sea view on Tran Phu costs roughly double an identical room one block inland, and the beach is public along its whole length, so the view is the only thing the money buys. On a two-night stop that is a poor trade.
How much does a hotel in Nha Trang cost?
A guesthouse in the backstreets runs roughly 300,000 to 600,000 dong, a mid-range hotel with a pool 700,000 to 1,500,000, and a seafront tower from about 1,800,000. Prices climb sharply in July and August, which is the Vietnamese school holiday.
Should you stay near Cam Ranh airport instead?
Only for a resort holiday or a very early flight. The Bai Dai strip sits about 30 km south of the city near the airport, with long empty sand and large resorts, and nothing within walking distance. It is a different trip from staying in Nha Trang.
Which end of Nha Trang beach is best?
The middle and the south for swimming and restaurants, the north end for quiet and for the Po Nagar towers. The far north across the river is residential and cheap, and it puts a bridge between you and the evening.
Is Nha Trang noisy at night?
The tourist grid is, in a concentrated way. Bars around Biet Thu and the seafront run late and the karaoke is enthusiastic, while three streets inland is quiet by ten. Ask which side of the building a room faces before booking anything central.
