Da Nang or Nha Trang is a choice between two Vietnamese cities that look interchangeable in a search result. Both sit on the central coast. Both have an airport, a long beach, a seafront promenade and a July full of domestic holidaymakers.

The two cities are not interchangeable. One is a base, the other is a destination, and the wrong pick costs a week rather than an afternoon.

Which of the two coasts suits you?

Take Da Nang if you want a beach with everything else inside an hour of it: Hoi An at 30 km, Hue at about 100 km, and the Hai Van pass between them. Take Nha Trang if you want to swim, dive and eat seafood without getting into a car again.

What is Da Nang for?

Da Nang is the base for central Vietnam, and that is its strongest argument by a distance. Hoi An is 30 minutes south, Hue about 2.5 hours north over the Hai Van pass, and the Marble Mountains, Ba Na Hills and the Son Tra peninsula all sit within a short ride of the bridges.

Da Nang itself is orderly and modern, and cleaner than a city of a million people has any right to be. Its beach runs for kilometres with no wall along it.

The catch is that all this makes Da Nang a good place to sleep more than a place with much of its own. The things to do page is honest about what earns an afternoon and what is a queue for a photograph. Ba Na Hills is both: the Golden Bridge is genuinely spectacular, and it is a theme park reached by cable car with several thousand other people.

What is Nha Trang for?

Nha Trang is for the water, and it is the only Vietnamese city where that is the whole answer. Where to stay in Nha Trang covers which block puts you closest to it. The bay is ringed with islands, the diving is the country's most developed, and the boats leave from the middle of town rather than from somewhere you have to reach first.

Three things sit around that water. The Po Nagar Cham towers, about 1,200 years old, stand on a rise over the river mouth. The mud baths catch every visitor sooner or later. And the seafood is aimed at Vietnamese diners rather than at foreign ones.

Nha Trang is also the busiest resort city on the coast. A high-rise strip runs the length of the seafront, and the tourism industry has swung between Russian and Chinese markets for two decades. The things to do page covers what survives that, and it is more than the skyline suggests.

Which beach is better?

Da Nang's for space, Nha Trang's for swimming. My Khe sits on about 30 km of straight, open sand, and it never feels crowded because there is too much of it to fill. That openness is also its weakness. Nothing shelters the beach, so the surf gets up quickly and the red flags go out often between September and December.

Nha Trang's town beach is shorter and more built up, and it sits inside a bay. That shelter keeps the water swimmable for more of the year. If the test is whether a seven-year-old can swim after breakfast, shelter matters more than sand per person. The beach guide ranks both against the rest of the country.

When is each city at its best?

Da Nang and Nha Trang both take the central coast's rain from about September, and neither is a good beach bet in November. Da Nang's wet season runs September to December. October and November are the two months to avoid outright: the sea is rough, the flags are up, and a beach hotel becomes a room with a view of weather.

February to August is Da Nang's reliable half. The where to stay page explains why the city side, at 400,000 to 800,000 dong a night against 800,000 to 2,000,000 on the beach strip, is the better base in the wet months.

Nha Trang sits in a drier pocket of the coast. Its rain concentrates into October to December and falls lighter. The run from February to September is about as dependable as Vietnamese weather gets, and March to June is the best of it, so a trip locked to the autumn is the safer bet here.

The month-by-month guide sets both cities against the north and the south, which run on different calendars again.

Which is better for diving and the sea?

Nha Trang, and it is not close. The bay's islands hold the country's oldest dive industry. An Open Water course runs about 250 to 350 US dollars and two fun dives from around 70, the lowest prices in Vietnam. Sites sit close to shore and the conditions are gentle, which is what a course wants.

Da Nang's diving means the Cham Islands off Hoi An, about 15 km offshore. That is a day trip rather than a dive town. Both dive from roughly March to September. The diving guide covers what the visibility is like in each, and why Phu Quoc's season runs opposite to both.

Should you do both?

Rarely. They are about 530 km apart, which is an hour by air or 9 to 10 hours on the train up the coast, and a week split between them is a week of two similar beach cities.

With the time, pair Da Nang with Hue and Hoi An, as the five-day central route does. Or pair Nha Trang with somewhere unlike it. Mui Ne has the dunes, and Quy Nhon is the quiet version of Nha Trang before the towers went up.

What decides it, in one line?

Whether the beach is the trip or the base for it. Nha Trang is the better week for swimming, diving and eating fish, with the rest of the region left alone. Da Nang is the better week when the beach is where the day ends and the mornings belong to Hoi An, Hue and the pass between them.

FAQ

Should you go to Da Nang or Nha Trang?

Da Nang if you want a base with Hoi An, Hue and the Hai Van pass within an easy drive, and Nha Trang if the sea itself is the plan. Da Nang is a city with a beach attached; Nha Trang is a bay with a city built to face it.

Which has the better beach, Da Nang or Nha Trang?

Da Nang's My Khe is longer, wider and emptier, and it runs for kilometres of open sand. Nha Trang's town beach is a curve inside a sheltered bay, busier and more built up, but the bay gives it calmer water and the islands offshore that Da Nang has no equivalent of.

Which is better for a family?

Nha Trang, usually. The bay is calmer for swimming, the island trips are short, and the resorts are geared to it. Da Nang suits families who want to move around the region rather than settle into one stretch of sand for the week.

Are the seasons the same in both cities?

They overlap but they are not the same. Both take their rain from about September to December, with the worst of it in October and November, but Nha Trang's wet spell is shorter and lighter, and its dry run from February to September is one of the most reliable on the coast.

Which city is better for diving?

Nha Trang, comfortably. The islands in the bay are the country's most established dive area, and an Open Water course there runs about 250 to 350 US dollars, the cheapest in Vietnam. Both dive from roughly March to September, but Da Nang's diving means a day trip to the Cham Islands rather than an industry on the doorstep.

Can you fit Da Nang and Nha Trang into one trip?

You can, and most people should not. They are about 530 km apart, which is an hour by air or 9 to 10 hours on the train, and they are similar enough that the second one repeats the first. Pair either with somewhere unlike it instead.

Which one has better food?

Da Nang, for range and for what is nearby. Mi quang and banh xeo are local specialities and Hoi An's kitchens are half an hour away. Nha Trang's strength is narrower and real: seafood straight off the boats, plus bun ca and nem nuong that the city does better than anywhere else.
