Two days in Ninh Binh, and the boat that decides the first one

On this page
Ninh Binh sits about two hours from Hanoi. That is why most visitors see it between eleven and three, in a minibus, in the heat, on the wrong river. It is the most day-tripped landscape in the north, and the one that punishes day-tripping hardest.
Two days in Ninh Binh is not twice as much scenery. It is the same scenery at the two hours it is worth being in.
How should you split two days in Ninh Binh?
Give each morning to one thing and each afternoon to the bicycle. The boats are best before the coaches arrive and the Mua Cave steps are best at either end of the day. The flat roads between the karst are the part nobody plans and everybody remembers. The Ninh Binh hub covers what the place is; this page is the order.
| Day | Early | Middle | Late |
|---|---|---|---|
| One | Trang An boat, 2 to 3 hours | Lunch, rest through the heat | Mua Cave steps for the sunset |
| Two | Tam Coc boat or Hoa Lu | Cycle the valley roads | Bai Dinh, or the train back |
Day one: the boat, as early as it opens
Take Trang An first, and be on the water before nine. The route runs two to three hours through a chain of caves and past film sets left standing. The price is fixed at 250,000 dong a person, and the rowers work a rota rather than selling to you mid-river.
Boats seat four. If there are two of you, paying for the empty seats buys a quieter trip for less than lunch costs. The things to do page compares the two rivers in detail. The short version: Trang An is longer, quieter and better in most months.
Spend the middle of the day out of the sun. This is a limestone valley with very little shade, and the afternoon is not the time to climb anything.

Day one, late: the Mua steps
Climb Mua Cave in the last two hours of light. It is about 500 steps to the dragon on the ridge, twenty to thirty minutes at a steady pace. The view down over the Tam Coc valley is the photograph that sells the province.
Entry is 100,000 dong. Go at first light instead if the evening forecast is poor. Do not go at noon: the staircase is open rock facing the sun, and people turn back on it more often than they admit.
Day two: the second river, or the dry option
If the first boat was the best thing you did, take the second one. Tam Coc runs 90 minutes to two hours for 150,000 to 200,000 dong. It is prettier in the gold fortnight of late May and early June, and the hawking on the water is heavier.
If you would rather stay dry, Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh are the alternative. Hoa Lu was the capital in the tenth century and is now low ruins and two temples, worth about an hour. Bai Dinh is enormous and modern and takes two hours including the buggy ride. It divides visitors more sharply than anything else in the province.
What is the bicycle for?
Everything between. The valley floor is flat, the sites sit 3 to 8 km apart, and almost every guesthouse lends bicycles free or for very little.
The roads run along dykes between the rice with karst on both sides. They are the reason people stay a second night rather than something to do with it. Ride out towards Bich Dong or the Thung Nham bird garden and turn around when it suits you.
Why not do this from Hanoi in a day?
Because the two hours each way land you in the valley for exactly the wrong window. A day tour reaches the water at about eleven, when the boats are busiest and the light is flat. It leaves again before the ridge is worth climbing.
One night in Ninh Binh costs less than the tour and doubles what you see. Where to put that night is the subject of where to stay in Ninh Binh. The choice between the town and the valley matters more here than in most places.
How does this fit a longer trip?
Ninh Binh is the natural pairing with Ha Long Bay rather than a competitor to it, and the comparison guide sets out which of the two to drop when time is short.
Trains run from Hanoi in about 2.5 hours and buses in about 2. The province sits on the main line south, so two days in Ninh Binh also works as a stop rather than a return trip. On a longer route, the one-week northern loop gives it the same two days without a detour.
FAQ
Is two days enough for Ninh Binh?
Two days is the right length and one is the common mistake. A day covers a boat trip and the Mua Cave steps at a rush; the second day buys the early water, the bicycle through the rice, and Hoa Lu or Bai Dinh without cutting the boat short.
Trang An or Tam Coc on the first day?
Trang An, for most people. It runs two to three hours through more caves on a fixed route at a fixed 250,000 dong, and the rowers do not sell to you on the water. Tam Coc is shorter and cheaper and is the better trip only when the rice is gold in late May and early June.
When should you climb the Mua Cave steps?
First light or late afternoon, never the middle of the day. It is about 500 steps cut into the limestone, twenty to thirty minutes at a steady pace, with no shade on the way up and the valley view at the top that sells Ninh Binh.
Should you stay overnight or day trip from Hanoi?
Stay. Ninh Binh is about two hours from Hanoi, so a day trip arrives mid-morning and leaves mid-afternoon, which is exactly the wrong window for both the boats and the steps. Staying costs one night and doubles what you see.
Do you need a bicycle in Ninh Binh?
It is the best way to move between the sites, and most guesthouses lend one. The valley is flat, the distances run 3 to 8 km, and the roads between the karst and the rice are a large part of what people come for rather than a way of getting to it.
What is worth doing on the second day?
The second boat river if the first one was good, or Hoa Lu and Bai Dinh if you want something dry. Hoa Lu is the tenth-century capital and takes an hour of low ruins; Bai Dinh is vast, modern and takes two, including the buggy ride.
When is the best time of year for Ninh Binh?
Late May and early June, when the rice in the Tam Coc valley turns gold, and September to November for clear dry weather. The limestone and the water work in any month, so the season decides the colour of the fields rather than whether the trip is worth taking.
